Android 2.1 (and below) support some, but not all, Microsoft Exchange security policy elements. Many IT departments require PIN enforcement and Remote Data Wipe. Unfortunately, these policies are not enforceable with the native Exchange client on Android 2.1.

HTC resolved this issue in HTC Sense compatible devices, blending the native Exchange client with custom code that is compatible with these policies. Some other vendors have done the same. Check with your phone manufacturer to see which specific Exchange security policy elements your device supports.

If you’re using a device that doesn’t meet the security requirements of your business, never fear! There are aftermarket (paid) apps in the Android Marketplace that supports these features and more. Each of these apps offers a different feature set, various widgets, and vastly different interfaces. I encourage you to evaluate the demos and select the appropriate product that meets your needs.

TouchDown supports PIN enforcement, remote data wipe, encryption of attachments on SD card, and many more features. It supports synchronization of Calendar, Tasks, Contacts, and E-mail. A free 30-day demo is available in the Android Market. Beyond the 30-day trial period, TouchDown will cost you $19.99 USD. A bit pricier than most apps in the Market, but well worth it if you require a security-aware Exchange client. A full list of features and detailed information on TouchDown can be found at NitroDesk Touchdown.

RoadSync, a DataViz product, is another option worth considering. It supports remote data wipe and PIN enforcement. It is slightly less costly with a price tag of $9.95 USD. A 14-day demo is available in the Android Market. Full product details can be obtained from DataViz – RoadSync.
