What Happened To My Driver?
Saturday morning at the golf course we were at was very busy, so we had some time to wait. We grabbed two buckets of balls and headed off to the driving range. We started hitting balls slowly, building up to some long irons and woods, remember to always warm up before you play a round of golf; you could knock five to eight strokes off your score by doing this regularly. Our tee off time approached as we started walking back to the first tee, we waited and watched people teeing off. It is always interesting to see how golfers handle the first tee shot. You can almost tell who warmed up and who didn’t, the warm up shows because you look more relaxed, not stiff in your arms and shoulders like some of the other golfers in your group. We got off the first tee with no bad shots, got down the fairway in two and pitched on the green. We both then two putted for a bogie five each on the first hole, oh well, seventeen more to go. This course is hilly and usually windy, the course is only ten years old so the trees are not mature and do not block much wind.
We played good golf all the way to number nine, then I got a birdie and Wes got a bogie. Lunch consisted of packed sandwiches from home because we make them better than the restaurant at the golf course, and its cheaper. Save money on the small things so you can buy that new wedge you have wanted for the past couple of months. I saw some amazing putting from the group so far today, I think the when the greens are in good shape you can sink almost any putt. You could also have perfect greens and not be putting well too, but that is golf! Onward to the next hole, lets see how we can do on this long par five. This is number sixteen, a beast with water and bunkers everywhere. There is out of bounds on the right, one pond guards the middle of the fairway on the left, needless to say that a nice long straight drive will be good right about now. We discussed who should go first, me again because I had par on the last hole. My driver at this point in time was a Big Bertha, I could really put a good swing on with that club. I teed up my ball, aligned myself accordingly, took another look at the target in the fairway and started my back swing.
The three other golfers were standing off to the side facing me, I am not sure what exactly happened next but when I swung through the ball, the shaft on my driver broke halfway up. When I finished my swing, I was amazed to see that half my driver was missing. Just as I noticed this, I looked over to see the three of them rolling on the ground laughing very hard, I tried to ask them what was so funny but all that Wes could do was point at my neck like there was something around it. I looked at my left shoulder and to my surprise the head and rest of the shaft were there, wrapped around my neck. The fibers that came off the shaft wrapped around my neck like a rope wrapping itself around a pole, lucky I did not lose an eye. Well I guess I will be using my three wood now that my driver is done. If only somebody had of been videotaping me that would have been worth something, who knows! We all had a great time golfing like we always do. When I got home that day, I called the golf store and explained what happened. They said that they would replace it because there was a batch of defective shafts that had been shipped by mistake. The guys still remember that golf shaft shattering into pieces to this day.
